START PLANNINGYes, Hemis sits at around 3,800 meters. Spend at least 1-2 days in Leh (3,500m) first to adjust to the altitude. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and take it slow to prevent headaches and nausea.
Winter months (December-March) offer the best chances to spot snow leopards, when they descend to lower altitudes. You can join organized snow leopard tracking expeditions with local guides who know the terrain and their behavior patterns for higher chances of spotting them.
While a day trip from Leh covers the monastery visit comfortably, we recommend staying overnight if you want to explore hiking trails. For the Hemis Festival, plan for at least 1-2 days to see all performances & rituals. For the Hemis National Park Safari, you can spend anything between 3 to 12 days depending on the wildlife you wish to spot.
