Handpicked For You: Best Locations in India to Visit for an Unforgettable Holiday

I've spent years exploring the incredible Indian subcontinent, and every trip still surprises me. The country still keeps pulling me back with new stories, new flavors, new moments. But here's the deal with a significant part of the internet’s India travel advice. It's either completely generic or so focused on being "authentic" that it forgets you actually want to enjoy your holiday. I'm going to give you both. The must-sees that live up to their reputation, along with the practical information that'll make your trip smoother.

These ten best locations in India to visit represent the very best of what the country has to offer, each one unique enough to justify its own trip, yet diverse enough to give you a taste of this subcontinent’s extraordinary range.

What makes these Indian destinations stand apart from India’s myriad of locations?

These 10 best locations in India to visit perfectly balance must-see iconic sites with hidden gems. From Hampi's gravity-defying boulder landscapes to Kashmir's floating houseboats, each location has authentic experiences that go beyond generic travel advice. Our selection includes UNESCO sites, living forts, spiritual centers, and cultural capitals that showcase India's extraordinary diversity.

Hampi, Karnataka– Ancient South Indian Empire Ruins

This UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the best off-beat India adventure places. It is a surreal landscape of giant boulders and ancient ruins that'll make you question everything you thought you knew about medieval Indian architecture. The Vijayanagara ruins stretch across a landscape with massive granite rocks that balance in ways that defy physics & create natural amphitheaters. The Vittala Temple complex alone will keep you mesmerized for hours. And that famous stone chariot is not just Instagram bait (though it photographs beautifully)

But here's what I wish someone had told me on my first visit– stay overnight! This isn't a day-trip destination. There's something about waking up surrounded by all this history that changes how you see the place. The coracle rides across the Tungabhadra River at sunset are magical, but go early in the morning instead. You'll have the whole experience to yourself, and the light hitting those rock formations is absolutely ethereal.

Rann of Kutch, Gujarat–  Ethereal White Desert Landscapes

The Rann of Kutch during full moon nights is otherworldly. I know that sounds like a travel brochure, but I'm struggling to find better words for one of the most scenic travel places in India. It's a salt desert that stretches to the horizon, white as fresh snow, under skies so clear you can see satellites moving. The famous Rann Utsav festival (November to February) turns this remote region into a cultural extravaganza, but I urge you to not just stick to the main festival area and venture into the villages nearby– Bhuj, Khavda, Dhordo.

Rann of Kutch white desert, famous for salt flats, camel rides, and sunsets—one of the best locations in India to visit and explore.

The artisans there work with techniques passed down through generations. Mirror work, bandhani tie-dye, intricate embroidery that takes months to complete. The quality of their craft is incomparable, and you're supporting families who've maintained these crafts despite everything that pushes the world towards advancement. If you’re going there just to witness the fascinating white desert effect, you must note that it only happens during the dry season. Monsoon season turns this into a completely different landscape, still beautiful but not the mirror-like salt flats you're probably expecting.

Goa– India’s Coastal Paradise

Everyone thinks they know Goa, but most visitors barely scratch the surface of its tropical coastline. Sure, the beaches are gorgeous and the seafood is incredible, but there's so much more happening here if you know where to look. Head south to Palolem or Agonda for that postcard-perfect beach experience without the chaos. But honestly? Some of my best Goan memories happened away from the coast entirely. The spice plantations near Ponda offer experiences that'll change how you think about food forever.

Old Goa's churches tell stories that most people rush past. The Basilica of Bom Jesus isn't just architecturally stunning; it houses the remains of St. Francis Xavier. The history here spans continents and centuries. I spent an entire afternoon in Se Cathedral just absorbing the weight of all those prayers echoing off 400-year-old walls. The food you get beyond beach shacks is incredible– you’ll taste a fusion of Portuguese and Konkani influences that you won't find anywhere else in India.

Srinagar, Kashmir– Paradise on Earth among the Himalayas

Kashmir really is “paradise on earth”. I know, I know, everyone says that. But floating on Dal Lake at dawn, watching the Himalayas emerge from morning mist, you understand why the cliché exists. The houseboats aren't just accommodation, but floating pieces of history itself. On my latest holiday in Kashmir, my houseboat owner's family had been running boats for four generations. Their stories gave context no guidebook could match.

Srinagar’s iconic houseboat on Dal Lake, surrounded by mountains—one of the best locations in India to visit for natural beauty and culture.

Shalimar and Nishat Gardens showcase Mughal gardens at their finest– terraced levels, water channels, mountain backdrops... its garden design as poetry. But I’m really glad I ventured beyond the famous ones to Chashme Shahi. Its natural spring feels more intimate and peaceful. The water here is said to have medicinal properties. I can't vouch for that, but it tastes incredibly pure! A must-buy from Kashmir is their authentic Pashmina shawls– one of the world’s most luxurious fabrics, originating from the Himalayas itself. You’ll find how real Pashmina feels different from machine-made versions– it's softer, lighter, and the hand-work shows.

TL;DR: Dal Lake's floating houseboats are a unique accommodation experience, while Srinagar’s Mughal gardens are a terraced paradise against Himalayan views.

Agra, Taj Mahal– the World’s Most Iconic Marble Wonder

The Taj exceeds all expectations as the most wonderful place to visit in India. Which is saying something considering how much hype surrounds it. I've experienced it during different times of the year, and nothing compares to those early morning hours when the marble catches the first golden light. The crowds are almost non-existent, and watching the monument transform as the sun climbs is the kind of moment that makes you understand why people travel halfway around the world for a single building.

At the Taj, having a private expert guide is an absolute game-changer, especially if you’re witnessing the marvel for the first time. And if you’re planning your tour with a luxury Indian travel agency, you can be the first one of the day to enter the complex & watch the Taj glow. What makes Agra even more brilliant for first-time US travelers to India is how perfectly it fits into the Golden Triangle circuit. Delhi, Agra, Jaipur... this three-city introduction gives you everything Northern India's famous for, in 5 to 7 days.

Jaisalmer, Rajasthan– A Rugged Golden Desert Town

Jaisalmer rises from the Thar Desert like something out of Arabian Nights. My personal favorite is a luxury sundowner after an adventurous camel safari across the Sam Sand Dunes here. And I've stayed at some incredible places around the world, but nothing quite prepared me for waking up in a luxury desert camp right in the middle of a desert. The contrast between comfort and the raw desert wilderness makes up a surreal experience that's uniquely Rajasthani.

The Golden Jaisalmer fort itself isn't just a monument you visit and leave. It's one of the world’s very few living forts, hosting a whole city where families have resided for generations– and the best way to understand it is through private guided tours that can access areas most tourists never see. The city works beautifully as part of a luxury Rajasthan itinerary too. From here, you can continue to Jodhpur & Udaipur, exploring royal heritage at its finest with palace stays & comforts that make long-distance Indian travel truly enjoyable.

TL;DR: This golden desert city rises like Arabian Nights from the Thar Desert, offering luxury camp experiences and one of the world's few living forts where families have resided for generations.

Alleppey, Kerala– Floating Luxury across Backwaters

Kerala's backwaters are famous worldwide as one of the most rejuvenating travel places in India, but you need to know more than just the houseboats to experience them authentically. Its network of canals, rivers, and lagoons here makes up an ecosystem that's supported local communities for centuries. The luxury houseboats here aren't a typical cruise– they're beautifully crafted replicas of traditional kettuvallams, but with all modern comforts you can expect from a lakeside resort.

Go beyond the town to the Kumrakokom Bird Sanctuary for some spectacular birdwatching, especially during migratory season (November to February). The variety here is staggering. Even non-birders like me will find themselves fascinated by herons, kingfishers, and cormorants going about their daily business. The food on houseboats is Kerala cuisine at its finest. Fresh fish prepared with coconut and local spices, served on banana leaves while floating through palm-fringed canals... it doesn't get much better.

Ranthambore, Rajasthan– A Royal Tiger Safari

I've done wildlife safaris across India, but Ranthambore consistently delivers the most thrilling tiger encounters. This former royal hunting ground has become one of India's most successful tiger conservation stories, and I can tell you that your chances of spotting these magnificent cats here are better than almost anywhere else in the country. The park's open terrain and excellent road network make spotting and tracking much easier than in denser forests elsewhere.

The 10th-century Ranthambore Fort, perched on a rocky hill inside the park, is worth exploring even if you're here primarily for wildlife. Also explore the Trinetra Ganesh Temple, Padma Talao, and palace ruins scattered throughout the sanctuary. Luxury properties around Ranthambore understand that great tiger safaris require early starts and long days, so they've perfected the art of premium lodges. Stay at the Amanbagh Resort, The Oberoi Vanyavilas & Taj Sawai here.

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh– India’s Most Sacred & Mystical Ghats

Varanasi takes to your senses in ways that no amount of preparation can ready you for. Mark Twain called it "older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend," and stepping onto those ghats for the first time, you understand exactly what he meant. The Ganges isn't just a river here. It's a spiritual highway where life and death intersect matter-of-factly. Watching cremation ceremonies at Manikarnika Ghat initially feels voyeuristic, but locals explain death here as celebration, not sorrow. This mystical aspect makes it a popular holiday destination in India for solo-travelers & spiritual seekers alike.

Dawn boat rides along the ghats are fascinating. Pilgrims performing puja, washermen beating clothes against the bank steps, sadhus (monks) meditating... it's been the same for centuries. I found myself returning every morning, drawn by the consistency of it all. The evening Ganga Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat is unmissable, experience it with a  private river cruise for the best viewpoints. The synchronized prayers, floating diyas, and chanting create an atmosphere that's genuinely moving.

Kolkata, West Bengal– the Cultural Capital & City of Joy

Aptly called the “Cultural Capital” of India, Kolkata has an unmistakable charm in its vibrant lanes. The intellectual tradition is palpable. College Street, with countless bookstores and coffee houses, has nurtured writers, poets, revolutionaries for generations, including the Nobel Prize in Literature winner– Rabindranath Tagore. The famous Indian Coffee House still serves coffee that tastes exactly like it did when Allen Ginsberg frequented the place.

Durga Puja (usually in October-November) transforms the entire city into an art gallery. Elaborate pandals showcase incredible creativity, each unique. But even outside festival season, Kolkata's artistic spirit is evident everywhere. What I love most about this town is how unapologetically itself it remains. While other cities race toward modernization, Kolkata retains its quirks and traditions. The result is a city that feels authentic in ways that are increasingly rare.

FAQs

1. What's the best time to visit these popular destinations in India?
India is expansive and the country sees 6 seasons throughout the year. Winter months (October-March) work best for most locations across the North, including the Taj Mahal & Rajasthan. Kashmir is beautiful in summer, while Goa and Kerala are perfect during winter.

2. What's the ideal duration for a first-time trip to India?
I'd recommend a minimum 10-12 days for first-time US travelers to India, though 2-3 weeks is ideal. The Golden Triangle (Delhi-Agra-Jaipur) needs 6-7 days, for enough time to absorb each city without rushing. Add Kerala or Goa for 4-5 days if you want diversity. Remember, India can be overwhelming initially, so factor in rest & buffer days and don't pack your itinerary too tightly.

“I would highly recommend this company!”

“I came in a group of 5 young women and we were a little nervous about coming to India. TRAVELOSEI made us feel very safe here. They picked us up from our hotel and even though we had a plan of things we wanted to visit, they are very flexible. We made several detours each day and they took us wherever we wanted to go. The drivers were excellent and the tour guides were very knowledgable. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with them, we will absolutely use them when we come back!”

“We had a terrific time!”

“I went to India with a few coworkers for a business trip and we booked a Taj Mahal tour on our 24 hr layover in Delhi. Travelosei took care of everything - they organized the car transport (including a last minute swap when we had to switch hotels) and planned a lovely tour of Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and a few artisans. At every stop, we skipped the lines and our guide Talib knew all the best places to get great views and take nice pictures of us. He also shared a lot of history as we walked through the sites. We had a terrific time and cannot recommend TRAVELOSEI enough.”

“Thank you so much TRAVELOSEI”

“The amount of knowledge and details in his stories as well as history. He was also wonderful at guiding us through the local culture how to act where how and what not to. Javed was very patient and very kind to my many questions about the smallest things. Such a good experience with TRAVELOSEI in general. This was our second trip to Agra but the first time with them. And what a pleasure. When I come back or I know anyone going to Agra I will diffidently suggest them to have Javed to guide them around if he has time. Thank you so much TRAVELOSEI”
