India Visa for US Citizens: Everything You Need to Know Before You Apply

Planning a trip to India is exciting, but before you start mapping out your itinerary or researching the best street food in Delhi, it’s crucial to get your documents in order, the most important being your visa. The good news is that India has made this process significantly easier for American travelers over the years. You no longer have to visit a consulate or deal with stacks of paperwork. The India evisa for US citizens is an online process, and most people can get it done in under an hour if they have everything ready. That said, small mistakes can slow things down or get your application flagged. This guide walks you through the entire process clearly so you can get approved and focus on the fun part of trip planning.

How hard is it to get an Indian evisa as an American?

A: Honestly, it is not as complicated as most people expect. The India evisa for US citizens process is mostly online, but there are a few details around documents, photo specs, and timing that can trip people up if they are not prepared.

What Exactly Is the India Evisa and How Does It Work?

India E-visa or Visa Photo

The Indian E-visa was introduced by the Indian government to streamline the visa process. It is an electronic travel authorisation that allows travellers from eligible countries, such as the US, to enter the country without a physical stamp on their passport.

Upon approval of the visa, it gets linked directly to your passport number. Immigration officers at Indian airports pull up your visa details when you arrive. You just show your passport and a printed or digital copy of your evisa approval letter, and you are good to go.

TL;DR: The India evisa is a fully online visa that gets linked to your passport digitally.

Who Qualifies: Are All US Citizens Eligible?

Most US citizens are eligible for the India evisa for US citizens, but there are a few conditions worth knowing. Your passport needs to be valid for at least six months beyond your intended date of arrival in India. If your passport is expiring soon, renew it before you apply.

You also need to enter India through one of the designated evisa airports or seaports. The list is long and includes all major international entry points like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kochi, among others.

One more thing: if you hold dual citizenship, make sure you are applying with the same passport you will use to travel. The evisa is tied to a specific passport number, so mixing them up creates problems at immigration.

Types of India Evisa: Tourist, Business, and Medical

There are 3 main types of India evisa available to US citizen applicants, and it’s important to pick the right one.

For most American travelers, the Tourist evisa is required. It allows you to visit India for tourism, recreation, leisure, or to visit family or friends. It comes in 3 durations: 30 days (single entry), 1 year (multiple entry), and 5 years (multiple entry). The one-year option is the most popular for first-time visitors as it provides you with flexibility.

Business evisa: for travelers attending meetings, conferences, trade fairs, or seeking business opportunities. It does not allow you to take up paid employment in India.

The Medical evisa is for people traveling to India specifically for medical treatment. It comes with a companion evisa option for family members traveling with the patient.

Pick the category that matches your actual reason for travel. Choosing the wrong type can cause issues at immigration, even if you are approved.

TL;DR: Most American travelers need the Tourist evisa.

Step-by-Step: How to Fill Out the Application Without Mistakes

The application itself is on the official portal. Here is what the process looks like:

Start by selecting your visa type and entering your travel dates. Then fill in your personal details exactly as they appear on your passport. You will be asked basic details such as your travel history, your parents' birthplaces, and a few background questions. Answer everything honestly and accurately to the best of your ability.

Next, upload your photo. Make sure it meets the specific requirements listed on the website. The photo must be a recent color photo with a white background, taken straight on, with no glasses, and your full face clearly visible. A selfie usually does not meet the requirements. Use a proper passport photo if possible.

Finally, upload a scanned copy of your passport's bio page. Make sure the scan is clear, and all four corners of the page are visible.

After completing all the steps, pay the application fee and submit your form. Make sure to take a screenshot of the form and your confirmation email.

Documents You Need Before You Start the Application

Getting your documents together before you open the application saves a lot of back-and-forth. Here is what you need for the India e-visa for a US citizen application:

A valid US passport with at least six months of validity beyond your arrival date in India. A scanned copy of the bio data page of that passport. A recent passport-sized photo meeting India's specifications (white background, no glasses, full face visible). A valid email address where your approval will be sent. A debit or credit card to pay the application fee.

If you are applying for a business evisa, you may also need a letter from your company or the Indian business you are meeting with. For a medical evisa, a letter from the hospital in India is typically required.
Double-check everything before you submit the application; once submitted, it can not be edited.

Fees, Processing Time, and When to Apply

India Airport Security Check Pic

Like any other visa, there is a nominal fee for applying. The fee depends on the type and duration of your trip. The tourist evisa fees range from around $10 for the 30-day option to $25 or more for the one-year and five-year versions.

Processing typically takes two to four business days, but it can sometimes take longer during peak travel seasons. The Indian government recommends applying at least four to seven days before your travel date. However, we’d recommend applying 2-3 weeks in advance to clear up any issues before your travel date, if there are any. Waiting until the last minute is a bad idea, as that can be quite stressful and can be avoided easily.

TL;DR: Apply for your India evisa at least three weeks before your trip.

Common Reasons Applications Get Rejected (And How to Avoid Them)

Rejections happen more frequently than people realise, but the good news is that most of the reasons listed below are easily avoidable if you pay close attention to the points above.

Most of the time, applications get rejected due to the photograph issues. The photos need to meet a specific requirement of having a white background and a full face. This leads to an application getting flagged. If you’re unsure of how to get the right photograph, use a passport service to give you the passport with the exact dimensions and background.

Another issue that arises is the difference between the name on the application and the passport. Ensure your name is typed exactly as the one on your passport, including middle names if that applies to you.

If your passport is about to expire in 6 months before you arrive, there’s a high chance you’ll get rejected, so make sure to renew your passport before applying.
Applying for the visa with the incorrect visa category, such as one that does not match your travel purpose, leads to rejection as well.
Now, don’t fret if, by chance, the application does get rejected; you can reapply. The fee is generally non-refundable. The US Department of State's travel page has additional guidance on entry requirements worth reviewing before you apply.

Arrival, Entry Rules, and What to Expect at Indian Immigration

Once you have your India evisa for a US citizen approval in hand, the arrival process is pretty straightforward. Print out your evisa approval email or have it saved on your phone. When you land, follow the signs to immigration.
There will be an immigration officer to whom you will hand your passport, and they will scan the passport.

You will hand over your passport and evisa approval to the officer. They will scan your passport, verify your evisa details in the system, and stamp your passport with your entry. The stamp will show how long you are allowed to stay, so pay attention to that date.

Each evisa has a maximum stay per visit, typically 90 days for US citizens on a tourist evisa, though this can vary. Overstaying your visa is a serious issue that can result in fines or being barred from future entry, so keep track of your dates.

Also note that the evisa does not allow you to convert it to a different visa type once you are in India. If your plans change and you need to stay longer, you would need to exit and re-enter or visit a local Foreigners Regional Registration Office, which is a complicated process. Plan your dates carefully from the start.

FAQs

1. How long does it take to get an Indian evisa for a US citizen?

Most applications are processed within two to four business days. During busy travel seasons, it can take a little longer, so apply at least two to three weeks before your departure date to be safe.

2. Can I apply for the India evisa if my passport is expiring soon?

No. Your passport needs to be valid for at least six months beyond your planned arrival date in India. If it is expiring before that window, renew your passport first and then apply for the evisa.

3. What happens if my India evisa application gets rejected?

You can reapply, but the fee is typically non-refundable. Go back through your application carefully, fix whatever caused the issue (usually a photo problem or a name mismatch), and submit a new application. Give yourself enough time before your trip so a rejection does not derail your plans.

“I would highly recommend this company!”

“I came in a group of 5 young women and we were a little nervous about coming to India. TRAVELOSEI made us feel very safe here. They picked us up from our hotel and even though we had a plan of things we wanted to visit, they are very flexible. We made several detours each day and they took us wherever we wanted to go. The drivers were excellent and the tour guides were very knowledgable. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with them, we will absolutely use them when we come back!”

“We had a terrific time!”

“I went to India with a few coworkers for a business trip and we booked a Taj Mahal tour on our 24 hr layover in Delhi. Travelosei took care of everything - they organized the car transport (including a last minute swap when we had to switch hotels) and planned a lovely tour of Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and a few artisans. At every stop, we skipped the lines and our guide Talib knew all the best places to get great views and take nice pictures of us. He also shared a lot of history as we walked through the sites. We had a terrific time and cannot recommend TRAVELOSEI enough.”

“Thank you so much TRAVELOSEI”

“The amount of knowledge and details in his stories as well as history. He was also wonderful at guiding us through the local culture how to act where how and what not to. Javed was very patient and very kind to my many questions about the smallest things. Such a good experience with TRAVELOSEI in general. This was our second trip to Agra but the first time with them. And what a pleasure. When I come back or I know anyone going to Agra I will diffidently suggest them to have Javed to guide them around if he has time. Thank you so much TRAVELOSEI”
