India Visa Requirements & Cost: Everything Americans Need to Know Before They Go

There’s a lot of allure in travelling to India, the history, the food, the landscapes. There’s a reason why it’s on almost every American’s bucket list, but before you start to plan out your itinerary, it’s important to get your documents in order, the first of those being your visa. A lot of people put this off until the last minute, but this is one of the biggest mistakes you can make in your trip planning. This blog will cover everything you need to know before you apply for that visa and all the things you need to keep in hand whilst applying. Whether you are a first-timer trying to figure out where to even start or someone who has traveled internationally before and just wants a clear breakdown, this guide covers everything about India visa requirements & cost so you can go into the process feeling prepared and not stressed.

How hard is it for Americans to get a visa for India?

It’s not that hard to get the visa if we’re being completely honest, you just need to avoid making some silly mistakes whilst applying, so it’s important to understand what type of form and material you’re working with. The India visa requirements & cost vary depending on the type of visa you need and how long you plan to stay, but for most American travelers, the e-Visa option makes the whole process a lot less stressful than you might expect. A little prep goes a long way!

Types of Indian Visas Available for American Citizens

There are various visa categories one can apply for, depending on the purpose of your visit. These are the main ones that you need to be aware of before applying.

First off, you have the tourist visa, which is the most common for traveling. This visa allows you to sightsee, visit friends and family, as well as participate in recreational activities. This visa can be procured as an E-visa or even as a sticker visa, which can be accessed through a physical stamp on your passport from the Indian Consulate.

The second category is the business visa, which is especially made for people who are attending meetings, conferences, or even trade events. This one is heavier on the documentation side rather than the tourist visa.

Medical visas are issued more often than you think. This has been created specifically for medical treatment. There has been a rise in this due to India’s growing medical tourism industry.

The student visa and employment visa exist for longer stays involving education or work and require approval from Indian institutions or employers.

For most Americans reading this, the tourist e-Visa is what you are going to need, and it is also the easiest to get. The India visa requirements & cost differ slightly across these categories, so make sure you are applying for the right one from the start.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply for an Indian Visa Online

TG state portal

Applying for the visa itself is not a complicated process; it just requires you to be organised and have all your documents on hand before applying. The first step in applying is going to the visa portal. You must be on a government site and not a 3rd party site. Not only are these sites not official, as in government-verified, but they also add extra fees on top of the official cost.

Once on the website, fill out the application form. You’ll need to provide your personal details, basic information about your travel dates, passport information, and the purpose of your visit. You will be required to provide all of this information. Make sure you double-check everything before submitting because errors can cause delays or rejections.

Then upload the required documents to the portal. The documents usually only include, but are not limited to: a copy of your scanned passport bio page, a recent passport-size photo with a white background, and additional documents depending on the type of visa you’re applying for.

After that, pay the visa fee online using a credit or debit card. Once payment is confirmed, you will receive an application reference number to track your status.

Most e-Visas for Americans are processed within 72 hours, though it can take up to four business days during busy periods. You will receive your approved e-Visa by email. Print it out and carry it with you to the airport along with your passport.

How Much Does an Indian Visa Cost in 2025?

Let us get into the actual numbers because understanding India visa requirements & cost means knowing what you are going to pay upfront.

For American citizens, the India tourist e-Visa fees are structured like this. The 30-day single-entry e-Visa costs around $25. The 90-day double-entry e-Visa is approximately $40. The one-year multiple-entry e-Visa runs about $80. There is also a small service or bank processing fee added on top of these amounts during payment.

Now here is something worth knowing: India visa fees are not the same for every nationality. The fees are based on what Indian citizens are charged in other countries. This is a quick breakdown of how the visa cost varies country by country in dollars; in the UK, the cost is about $ 100 for a tourist visa, and Canadians pay about $80. Australian and New Zealand citizens pay around $25 to $30. Citizens of most European countries, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and other EU nations, pay roughly $25 to $80, depending on the visa duration. Japanese citizens pay around $25. Citizens of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar pay between $25 and $50 for standard tourist e-Visas.

These are the estimates for these figures as of 2026, and they are subject to change. It’s always crucial to verify through the official portal to see what applies to your country before applying. Keeping in mind American travellers, the visa fee is quite nominal considering what an Indian trip consists of.

TL;DR: India visa fees for Americans start at around $25 and go up accordingly.

How Long Does It Take to Get an Indian Visa Approved?

Planning any trip requires you to take into account all the trip details, and that includes pre-trip processing as well. Such as the amount of time it’ll take to process the visa and get it approved.

For the e-Visa, the standard processing time is 72 hours or three business days. In most cases, American applicants receive their approved visa within this window. However, during peak travel seasons like October through March or around major Indian holidays, processing can stretch to four or five business days.

Because of this, it is strongly recommended that you apply at least four 2-3 weeks before your travel date. Do not wait until the last minute. If something goes wrong with your application or a document is flagged, you need that buffer time to fix it.

If you are going the consulate route for a regular sticker visa, processing times are longer, typically one to two weeks, depending on the consulate workload and the time of year.

Documents You Need to Have Ready Before You Apply

The Indian E visa portal

Before applying for your visa, to streamline the process and make it easier for yourself, you can prepare ahead of time and get your documents together before you sit down to apply. It saves a lot of time and reduces the chances of mistakes. Here are the documents you’ll need for applying for the e-visa.

Firstly, you’ll need your US passport, which is 6 months of validity beyond your departure dates, and has at least 2 blank pages. A recent passport-sized color photo with a white background, no glasses, and a neutral expression. A scanned copy of the biographical page of your passport. A valid email address where your approved visa will be sent. A credit or debit card for the visa fee payment.

Along with these documents, the business visa also requires a letter from a US-based company and an invitation from the host organisation in India. A letter from the hospital or a doctor in India is required for a medical visa.
The State Department's travel information page is a solid resource to cross-check entry requirements and any current travel advisories for India before you apply.

When applying, keep the processing time in mind, although it says it only takes about 72 hours, applying that close to the date of departure is risky. Give yourself at least 2-3 weeks so everything has ample time to process, or you have time to correct mistakes if any arise. Reapplication is a possibility; you just have to pay a nominal fee for the same.

Visa on Arrival, Extensions, and Other Things Worth Knowing

Hotel in India

Here are a few things that may come off as unusual when applying for the Indian visa, but they’re important to know. India doesn't have a traditional visa-on-arrival option for American tourists. The best option would be to apply for the E-visa, as it is pre-approved before your departure electronically and gets linked to your passport number.

A few things that do not always make it into standard India visa requirements & cost breakdowns, but are genuinely useful to know. India does not offer a traditional visa on arrival for American citizens. The e-Visa is the closest equivalent since it is pre-approved electronically.

If you want to extend your visa later in your trip, that is definitely possible, but it’s not as easy. Extensions can be made through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office, known as the FRRO, and they’re only granted during special circumstances such as medical emergencies or situations carried out which were beyond your control. Unfortunately, you can’t extend a tourist visa because you want extra time to explore. This is why it’s necessary to plan your itinerary accordingly before applying.

It’s also crucial to remember that the e-visa is only applicable through specific airports or seaports, so it’s necessary that you know the airport you’re travelling from is on the approved list, and you can verify this on the official online portal. Lastly, always make sure you carry a copy of your e-visa and passport with you; some immigration officers may ask to see a printed version, and so it’s always better to be on the safe side of these things. Having these things on hand makes entry smoother.

FAQs

1. Can I enter India multiple times on one visa?

Yes, if you choose the right visa type. The 90-day double-entry and one-year multiple-entry e-Visas allow you to leave and re-enter India. The 30-day single-entry tourist e-Visa does not allow re-entry once you leave.

2. Is the India e-Visa the same as a regular visa?

It serves the same purpose, but the process is different. It’s also electronically verified, whereas the regular sticker visa is a physical stamp on your passport.

3. What happens if my India visa application is rejected?

You can reapply after addressing the issue that caused the rejection. India visa requirements & cost information on the official portal will usually indicate why an application was not approved.

The drivers were excellent and the tour guides were very knowledgable. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with them, we will absolutely use them when we come back!”

“We had a terrific time!”

“I went to India with a few coworkers for a business trip and we booked a Taj Mahal tour on our 24 hr layover in Delhi. Travelosei took care of everything - they organized the car transport (including a last minute swap when we had to switch hotels) and planned a lovely tour of Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and a few artisans. At every stop, we skipped the lines and our guide Talib knew all the best places to get great views and take nice pictures of us. He also shared a lot of history as we walked through the sites. We had a terrific time and cannot recommend TRAVELOSEI enough.”

“Thank you so much TRAVELOSEI”

“The amount of knowledge and details in his stories as well as history. He was also wonderful at guiding us through the local culture how to act where how and what not to. Javed was very patient and very kind to my many questions about the smallest things. Such a good experience with TRAVELOSEI in general. This was our second trip to Agra but the first time with them. And what a pleasure. When I come back or I know anyone going to Agra I will diffidently suggest them to have Javed to guide them around if he has time. Thank you so much TRAVELOSEI”
